Yes, Dermot, you are right. The Baha'i Faith during the Sixties was extremely successful and fast-growing in South Vietnam. But this was not true in North Vietnam. After the American presence in South Vietnam ended, and Vietnam was unified, the Faith remained unrecognized and unsanctioned for a great many years. During that period, many South Vietnamese believers left the country, became inactive, or dropped out of sight in various other ways.

When Zabine and J.T. visited Hanoi in 1992, there were Baha'is in the south of Vietnam. As you perhaps know, if you've read Zabine's account of the history, it was to those Baha'is that she appealed for help to save the life of her husband after he fell ill. The story is here. It all ties together into really fascinating history.

Very interesting that the Faith took that long to reach Hanoi. In 1968 while in Thailand as an army medic I had the opportunity to see a Navy manual for new sailors in Vietnam. It had a section on Culture including religion in Vietnam, and began with the Baha'i Faith first of all, believe it or not. There were tens of thousands of Baha'is in Vietnam at that time. I also had the opportunity to meet Shirin Fozdar whose son, Jamshid, had been a pioneer in Vietnam before moving to Thailand.

Obviously have had this address for a looong time and kept it so family could find me.
Back in the day I knew David Neidig when he lived here in Illinois. And also knew Arlene Jenrich who knew David when he was even younger. It is a small world.
My husband was in Seoul, Korea, when we were involved there. How rewarding to know that Vietname has a community!

Good news about MARS!
I have the MARS program, personal edition I bought in 2000. I just rebuilt a computer with windows 7 and it wouldn't install. The good news is I figured it out! Copy the files from the CD to your Documents in Windows Explorer. Right click on the setup file. Select properties. Select compatibility. Under compatibility mode choose windows xp (service pack 2), then click the box that says "run this program in compatibility mode." Click Apply at the bottom, then OK. Double click on setup and it will install, and work! When you have it running, close the program and go to windows explorer, c drive program files marswin, right click on the Marswin application file, select create a shortcut. After you have created a shortcut on your desktop you can right click on the icon, select properties, select change icon, browse your document file where you copied MARS, select the icon! Now when you use the icon on the desktop it may ask you if you want to run this program on your computer, just say yes (I can't figure out how to avoid this step) and you're there. Enjoy!

The "beautiful lady" is Mrs. Tran Thi Bich. She's very dear to my wife Quynh and I, as we stayed with her family for over a month while we were in Hanoi. I caught bits and pieces of her history over time but I would have loved to be present for these proceedings to hear her tell the story.

Thank you so much for your many posts about Vietnam. Not only are they a joy for us to read personally, but they form part of an indispensable record of this very significant event in the development of the Bahá'í community of Vietnam.

I hope you don't mind, but I've quoted parts of this post on my own blog describing the National Convention, and linked and attributed it. Cheers!

Thank you, Patricia. One clarification: Dr. Dao An Son was the first known Baha'i in Hanoi -- not in Vietnam per se. There was a large, flourishing, rapidly expanding Baha'i community in South Vietnam long before the events being commemorated at this convention. I recall reading a great deal about that community during the Seventies, prior to the withdrawal of American troops.

Although the Baha'i community ebbed greatly after North/South unification, it never vanished. It was the Baha'is of Ho Chi Minh City that Zabine called in 1992 when her husband, J.T. Linkins, was near death in Hanoi. And it was one of those Baha'is, Le Ha, who risked his own life to bring J.T. the meds and antibiotics he required for survival. To understand the courage and heroism of that act, one would need to know the other circumstances of Le Ha's life -- a life certain to inspire generations as yet unborn.

Hello Gary,

I rather like your nice and very innovative use of Rainn Wilson's "Soul Pancake." From what you have shared here, and, from what Zabine has told me - including her mad ride on the back of a motor cycle through frightening and on-coming traffic - it truly felt like "Seoul Pancake" to me!

Thank you for sharing brother!

Thanks for asking, Linda. Yes, the entire presentation is online in website form at Heart to Heart HD. The actual web address is hearttoheart.bahaiteaching.net.

You can read the background in an earlier article on this site: New "high-def" Heart to Heart Site.

For most users, these free resources are excellent. But for anyone who wants more, there is a "pro" version available as a standalone PDF file (CD or download). It has an embedded search engine, fast and easy navigation, screen sharing, works offline, and much more. At $7.95, I think it's an incredible value. Please check it out at Zabine's amazing site, hearttoheartpublications.com/sharing-h2h, where she also offers a plethora of free supporting resources.

Thank you, Jo, for your kind comment -- and for "getting it". I mean, for for your instinctive response to the spiritual and historic significance of the occasion.

Unfortunately, the video sort of "got loose" on YouTube before most readers of The Astonished Tamale! could see my article. Thus many people never really knew the back-story. You wouldn't know the context simply by seeing the video itself, and I therefore felt the impact was under-appreciated.

Be that as it may, thank you again, dear friend!

Oops! Egg-on-my-face alert! Guess I didn't make clear which of the women in which of the photos is Zabine. For this article series, I haven't been using captions, but simply placing photos in-line next to the events being described. That's a less explicit method of labeling, more open to confusion.

Also, I had intended, at the outset of the series, to post an airport photo of Zabine and Peter saying their goodbyes. Looking back, I now see I never did this. My mistake!

So please click this photo. This depicts Zabine with two lovely young women, Ha and Huyen, who guided us on a tour of Hanoi's Old Quarter on our second day here. Zabine is of course the one on the left. (Just kidding! Zabine is over 35.)

Or check out the first photo in Hanoi from the Handlebars, where Zabine "Motorcycle Mama" Van Ness is being outfitted with helmet, just before first taking to the Hanoi streets.

I believe that Zabine was getting her nourishment from spiritual food.

Thanks, Jasmin. There's much more material to follow, including photos, video, and narrative. Please stay tuned, and consider subscribing to the blog via the "Email Updates" form at the upper right.

One perpetual wrinkle is that the more things are going on, the less time and energy remain to document them. As a chronicler of events, I prefer -- in theory anyway -- to remain detached. Almost a disembodied watcher, continually transmitting my observations. But the reality is that I'm caught up in the vortex of experiences I'm striving to share. These pull me along, day after day, nonstop, affording little opportunity to process and less to share.

I'm therefore playing continual catch-up, posting occasional updates in hope of retaining enough viewers for when I finally get to upload the rest of the wonderful sights, sounds, and discoveries with which Zabine and I are blessed.

Thank you, Kathy. Yes, I agree that Denny and Marsha are terrific. Did you learn about this site from them?

Please note that although I'm trying to post frequent updates about the Vietnam trip, there won't necessarily be new stuff every day. At times there might even be weeks in between, depending on how busy Stonehaven Press and my other Baha'i and non-Baha'i projects keep me. (Also, please remember that this isn't a "Baha'i" site, per se. Over time, many articles, if not most, will be much more generic.)

May I therefore suggest that you subscribe to the site using the "E-mail Updates" form in the upper right column? This way you will be automatically notified whenever there is new material. And in any case -- thanks again, and God bless you and your wonderful group.

How wonderful it is to have this exciting site to look forward to each day! Thank you so very much!

I am a close friend of Denny and Marsha [Rule], have been for many, many years. I currently live in a teeny tiny town just outside of Toledo, OH. My husband, Marc and I, are actually home front pioneering! We have formed our little Baha'i Group and are enjoying our teaching experiences; learning as we go along and trying to do our best.

You know, I think we owe Denny a HUGE thank you for bringing us, and so many, many others together. I look forward to KEEPING up with you! Thank you so very much for this wonderful, wonderful opportunity to come along with you on such a bountiful journey. God be with you.

Enjoying all your postings. When I lived in the East (Okinawa) I noticed also the use of color in everything. Perhaps it is the Buddhist influence in the culture of the East. In any case it is so enjoyable and adds to the beauty found in the natural world of that area. As I said I am enjoying your postings. I could almost taste the food at the noodle shop. I am so happy that the trip is more then you expected and that you are engaging in so many good memories.

Greetings Gary from beautiful Vancouver Island, the summer home of God! What a treat it is to follow the adventures of Zabine and your good self in Vietnam. As soon as I got caught up on everything you have written so far, I couldn't help but go and dig out my copy of "Servant Of The Glory" A Chronicle of 40 Years of Pioneering, by Dr. Dempsey Morgan. He and his dear wife Adrienne, spent several years teaching the faith with Jim Fozdar in Saigon in the late 50's. It is such a blessing to be able to follow your ventures almost instantaneously, through the magic of the Internet. Please convey a big hug to Zabine from Nancy and myself and perhaps the two of you might remember Dr. Morgan when you are teaching over there. He truly loved the people of Vietnam.

Thank you ever so much for such a wonderful job on making Heart to Heart available to many many friends. It is now truly easy to use and beautiful to look at.
Technology is a gift from Baha'u'llah, but it is us who have to use it to share His claim.
I want you to know Miles and I appreciate all of your hard work and dedication.

Here's hoping I didn't break the spell with the note about Heart to Heart HD. Regarding your question: "did they catch a rhythm to the mating call?" Judge for yourself: http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/13958630. That BBC article includes an actual sound recording of the lesser water boatman love song. Don't worry; it was recorded at a safe distance and muffled by water, so it shouldn't melt your speakers. Sure sounds rhythmic to me!

Your blog reminds me of why I fell in love with my future wife in Knoxville. The incredible romantic atmosphere of Knoxville must have temporarily clouded her reasoning -- lucky for me.

Too bad I didn't read your blog in time to cover the 1,613 miles between me and Knoxville without resorting to time travel, which requires a great deal of energy. Not green travel.

PS. I used to live in the University of Tennessee Football stadium.

Thanks, Patricia. The fact that Knoxville was ever first in the "restaurants per square mile" category is news to me. But that may help explain the high obesity rate here, which in turn contributes to the shortened lifespans about which Real Age is fussing.

Thank you also for the state information link. Please check it out, folks: Breathtaking views, fascinating facts. Of course we all know about Idaho and potatoes, but I didn't know it was called "The Gem State" -- or why. (Although, from an Astonished Tamale! perspective, potatoes are gems.)

Being an old "fart" from Knoxville myself, I was laughing all the way reading through your first article. I absolutely love the name of your website: The Astonished Tamale ...
It signals curiosity - a trait that many smart and successful people share - and it signals food!
I remember Knoxville at one time being the city having the most Restaurants per square mile in the entire country! Then of course I remember the Dogwood Trail, the gorgeous blossoms, and the rolling foothills of the Smoky Mountains, the long Indian summers, and the long Indian summers, and especially the long Indian summers. Currently living in Idaho, the Gem State, you will appreciate why I miss the long Indian summers. Our summers here are short, very short, but beautiful. Idaho is called the gem State for a reason. Check it out: http://www.netstate.com/states/intro/id_intro.htm
. . . I will enjoy many more of your "Tamales" on this blog, I'm sure. And to all you young lovers and romantics in the Knoxville area - take your loved ones out to dinner tonight to one of those many, many Restaurants to choose from. Happy Valentine's Day!

A brilliant blog from a brilliant mind. I laughed while reading...high romance in a city of "old farts"...how love blossoms in the Tennessee mountains...and demographic love metrics. Amazon's analysis also infers a high literacy rate in Knoxville; "what" is being read doesn't matter. Congratulations on a truly "loving" start!
